A well in St. Sebastin, Tamil Nadu, India

At Auara, we are working to combat the greatest form of poverty there is: the lack of clean drinking water.

CONTEXT

The lack of rainfall during the seasonal monsoons in recent years has led to the depletion of aquifers. Compounding this problem is the mechanization of farming and the increased supply of low-skilled labor, which leaves many of these small farmers and landless families unemployed and without income. With survival itself a challenge, they are forced to migrate and settle in cities in search of employment and income, often falling victim to exploitation due to the low wages resulting from their lack of qualifications.

OBJECTIVES

A well is drilled in the schoolyard, which supplies water to a 1,000-liter tank via a submersible pump. Faucets are installed on the school’s exterior walls; water flows to them by gravity, as the tank is located on the school’s roof.

Submersible pumps are more durable than hand-operated pumps because they are frictionless, much easier to maintain and virtually maintenance-free.
