Mekotto Well Rehabilitation, Cameroon

At Auara, we are working to combat the greatest form of poverty there is: the lack of clean drinking water.

CONTEXT

The Baka people are the last primitive society of the Cameroonian jungle. Their traditional way of life was nomadic, characterized by being great hunters, fishermen and fruit gatherers, however, since a few decades ago, they have been forced to undergo a process of sedentarization in the lands that traditionally belong to their neighbors the Bantu. Their current situation at all levels is extremely urgent, with very high rates of morbidity, mortality, underdevelopment and poverty. The majority of the Baka do not speak French, the official language of Cameroon, resulting in a real lack of communication with most of the authorities in their region (doctors, police, administration...).

OBJECTIVES

In the village of Mekotto, there is a water well equipped with an Indian Markt II hand pump, which is currently out of order; therefore, it is proposed that it be repaired.

The estimate for the repair is €490.82.

Any leftover material can be used to diagnose or repair another well.

There are 63 beneficiaries, 27 of whom are preschoolers. The water point is located at a community preschool, ensuring that the center’s students and teachers will use these facilities.
