Well in Bouga for water supply

At Auara, we are working to combat the greatest form of poverty there is: the lack of clean drinking water.

CONTEXT

Northern Benin is a region severely affected by climate change, with a single, erratic rainy season. Furthermore, there are no alternative sources of supply. The population is scattered, and within the villages themselves, the inhabitants are also scattered. This makes seasonal streams the only stable source of water supply.

From a health perspective, the lack of drinking water, combined with widespread malnutrition due to poor harvests, endemic malaria in the area, and the almost total absence of health services, makes Benin the eighth worst country in the world in terms of infant mortality, with an average healthy life expectancy of 53 years.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to help the population of Bouga escape this cycle of poverty by drilling a well that will guarantee a year-round water supply for a population of 550 people, 275 of whom are children.

In the Bougou region, it is necessary to drill deeper to find water. This not only makes drilling more expensive, but also requires the use of a Vegnet stand pump, which is more expensive than the Afridew hand pump.
