Background
Lupande elementary school is located in the Njombe region, in the southwest of the country. Lupande has 441 pupils, of which 218 are girls. More than 25% of primary schools in Tanzania lack any system that can provide safe drinking water for their pupils, as well as the possibility of teaching them good hygiene habits. More than 80% of the rural population uses unimproved sanitation systems or practices open defecation.
Objectives
The project aims to supply safe drinking water to this elementary school by piping water from the nearby water point to a tank that is installed on a tower that is built at a certain height. Once the tank is installed, taps are installed at strategic points decided between the school management and the contractor. The water reaches the taps thanks to the force of gravity. In addition to the installation, awareness and sensitization courses on the correct use of water and hygiene are carried out.
Milestones
As of today, 441 people have access to drinking water through this project.
