A tank at Kamayagi Primary School, Kenya

Background

In Tharaka, girls almost never complete their education. The main causes of this failure are the marginality of the
women and the mutilation of girls. Schools do not have running water so students have to bring water from home.
When not enough water is consumed, fatigue sets in. If we add to this the fact that it is the girls who carry the water in their bodies.
The problem is exacerbated by the heavy drums from the nearest river to their home and school. Therefore, having easy access to
access to water contributes to the elimination of school absenteeism and improved academic performance.

Objectives

The installation of the tank allows the girls attending Tharaka Secondary School to have stored rainwater. In times of drought, a tanker truck can be hired to supply the tank with water if rainfall has not been sufficient.
This school was chosen because it is a model of good management by its director and is in a particularly poor area.
