A well with solar pump and reservoir in Njoreng, The Gambia

Background

The village of Njoreng is located in the province of Central River, in a disadvantaged area, with poverty and few resources.
They have a total water shortage, which leads to food shortages. Thanks to the wells, the population has access to safe drinking water, improving their health, hygiene habits and food security. When there are no wells, it takes one to three hours to travel. If it is on foot, it takes an hour and a half each way with 20 to 25 liter tanks on their heads. In the best of cases they have a donkey with a "donki car" and the time is reduced to one hour.

Objectives

The project aims to provide safe drinking water to the 900 inhabitants of the village of Njoreng through the construction of a well with a reservoir in the schoolyard. After the well is drilled, a solar pump powered by four solar panels is installed. The water is stored in two tanks with a capacity of 2,000 liters each. Taps are then installed at different points that receive the water thanks to the force of gravity. This water is used for drinking and hygiene purposes. It is also used to irrigate the school's vegetable garden.

Milestones

This project has ensured that, to date, 900 people have access to drinking water.
