Background
Maluana is a neighborhood in the District of Manhiça, 70 kilometers from Maputo. Semirural area with high levels of poverty, in which diseases due to lack of drinking water and adequate sanitation (access to water does not reach 50% of the population and the rate of access to sanitation is less than 20%) are one of the main health problems, especially among children. Diarrhoea is the second leading cause of under-five mortality after pneumonia. In addition, in older children, these diseases lead to malnutrition and school absenteeism.
Objective
The Sanitary Engineering against Child Mortality project is tackling the problem through a comprehensive intervention that provides 172 people at each well with access to water and sanitation. It is working simultaneously in primary schools and homes to ensure greater impact, especially on the child population. A committee has been formed for the maintenance and management of the well, with a gender focus.
Milestones
This project has ensured that, to date, 172 people have access to drinking water.
