Butare hospital tanks, Uganda

At Auara, we are working to combat the greatest form of poverty there is: the lack of clean drinking water.

CONTEXT

At Butare Health Center III, through the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Council, efforts are underway to break down the barriers that prevent residents of the Buhweiju district from accessing healthcare facilities where they can receive the necessary medical care. Thanks to their work, Butare Health Center III is now a leading hospital in Butare. The data show a monthly increase in patients and the high quality of care being provided. In 2014 and 2015, inpatient wards, a clinic, examination rooms, a laboratory, and a pharmacy were built. More than 20,000 people are treated annually at the Butare hospital, which has made the well insufficient, leading to the decision to collect rainwater in tanks for later use.

OBJECTIVES

A practical and cost-effective solution is to install more rainwater collection tanks.

To this end, the new construction currently underway at the hospital would be utilized, with four 5,000-liter tanks installed to bring the total capacity to 20,000 liters. Since these are new buildings, this ensures that water collection will be efficient and clean.

This would provide the hospital with an additional 20,000 liters of water.

MILESTONES
