Well and reservoir at St. Joseph's High School, Tamil Nadu, India

Background
Schools like St. Joseph's High School in the small village of Thirumalairayapuram in Tamil Nadu province need access to safe drinking water.
In addition to providing safe drinking water to students, it helps them to learn healthy hygiene practices such as hand and tooth brushing.
In rural India, more than 29 million people do not have a minimum handwashing facility and more than 8 million people have a safe drinking water source more than 30 minutes from their homes.

Objectives
A borehole is drilled in the school playground that provides water to a 1,000-litre tank thanks to the installation of a submersible pump. Taps are installed on the outside walls of the school which receive water from the tank due to the force of gravity, as the tank is located on the roof of the school.
Submersible pumps are more durable than hand-operated pumps because they are frictionless, much easier to maintain and virtually maintenance-free.

Milestones

This project has ensured that, to date, 210 people have access to drinking water.
