Well and reservoir at Our Lady of Fathima Church & St. Joseph's Primary School, India

Background

The situation in the state of Tamil Nadu is, practically, of emergency; aquifers are dry after several years with very poor or non-existent monsoons. In addition, groundwater is poisoned due to industrial discharges.According to the WHO, in 2016 alone, more than 140,000 people died in India from diarrhea due to ingestion of bad water, while more than 126,000 died as a result of diarrhea caused by poor sanitation.

Objectives

The solution proposed for the Fathima Nagar parish and St. Joseph's Primary School is to drill a well in the courtyard between the parish and the school, and then install a submersible pump to draw water for storage in a 1,000-liter tank installed on the roof of the building. The water from the tank reaches the taps at street level thanks to the force of gravity.

Milestones

This project has ensured that, to date, 670 people have access to drinking water.
