Gougou-Bantogodo Well

Background

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country with scarce natural resources where agriculture accounts for 80% of the economy. The per capita income in 2020 was USD 830, and its population, estimated at just over 19 million, is growing at a rate of 3% per year.

Poverty declined from 47% in 2009 to 41.4% in 2018, but remains widespread in rural areas. It is most common and severe among women, who have few opportunities to access land and participate in decision-making.

One out of 4 Burkinabe living in rural areas does not have access to drinking water.

Objectives

The first step for the implementation of the project is the meeting with the traditional and district chiefs for the assignment of the work by the local population as well as the creation of the well management committee responsible for its maintenance.

Once the mechanical drilling has been carried out, the cantilever pump is installed, which can be used in wells dug to a depth of up to 100 meters and is very robust and durable.

Finally, the superstructure is built to protect the well and prevent the creation of puddles.
