Well at Bio Sika Kparou, Benin

Background

With more than 300 people, the Gandó ethnic group is considered inferior to the rest of the dominant ethnic groups in the region. They have to give up their place when they queue up, they cannot share meals or parties and, of course, they cannot marry them. Most of the economic resources come from the cultivation of the fields, from grazing and from the manufacture of shea butter. The only improved source is 1 kilometer away so they use highly contaminated open wells or marigots (groundwater that rises to the surface)

Objectives

The construction of a well with a foot pump (Vergnet) has been proposed on land ceded by the population of the village.
The first phase of the project consists of raising awareness and training the population in the use of safe drinking water and hygiene. In addition, a water committee has been set up to be responsible for the maintenance of the well.
In the second phase, the drilling and installation of the pump will be carried out. Finally, the concrete superstructure is built for the drains surrounding the well.

Milestones

This project will provide 200 people with access to clean water.
