Well with reservoir and vegetable garden in Sare Yerro

At Auara, we are working to combat the greatest form of poverty there is: the lack of clean drinking water.

CONTEXT

The Central River region in The Gambia is a disadvantaged area, marked by widespread poverty and limited resources. There are extremely high rates of malnutrition, primarily among children, but it affects the entire population since their diet consists almost exclusively of rice and peanuts.

The lack of drinking water is also a problem because they have to walk for hours to fill their water containers or, at best, find a pack animal to do so.

OBJECTIVES

The project consists of the drilling of a well, the installation of a submersible pump and solar panels for its operation, and the piping from the well to the reservoir and from the reservoir to the taps.

The process of building the garden begins with staking out the site, followed by fencing the area to keep animals out.

The men are taught how to work the land so that the plot is ready for planting. The women are then taught how to plant the seeds and the entire process involved in planting. Generally, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, beans, eggplants, peppers, cabbage, radishes, and sunflowers are planted. Moringa trees and banana trees are also planted. Recently, local potatoes and cassava have been planted as well.
