Pages Two tanks at CS Ciaumpiú, Kenya

Background

The Tharaka district, in the interior of Kenya, is one of the poorest in the country. The land is not fertile and the region suffers from constant periods of drought. A quarter of the rural Kenyan population gets water from surface sources, the main source of diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid and cholera, and rural health centers rarely have access to the amount of water they need, both for cleaning the center and for feeding and watering patients.

Objectives

The project consists of the purchase and installation of two tanks for rainwater collection. These same tanks are used in the dry season to store water purchased by the health center from tanker trucks, and to install the tanks it is necessary to build reinforced concrete bases to support them. The center covers the entire population settled in the surrounding villages, between 25,500 and 28,000 people who come to the clinic.

Milestones

This project has ensured that, to date, 2,500 people have access to drinking water.
