School bathrooms in Ciokereke, Kenya

At Auara, we are working to combat the greatest form of poverty there is: the lack of clean drinking water.

CONTEXT

InKenya, harmful traditional practices that endanger the health and lives of girls and women—such as child marriage, forced marriage, teenage pregnancy, and female genital mutilation—still persist.

Added to this is the lack of access tosafe sanitation facilities or infrastructurein schools, which, combined with families’ lack of financial resources, leads these young women to choose to stay home—especially during their menstrual periods—increasing the likelihood that they will drop out of school permanently and, as a result, face female genital mutilation, child marriage, or early pregnancy.

OBJECTIVES

Construction of school latrines in the Ciokereke educational center, with a focus on promoting the right to health for all girls in the region, Kenya.

This initiative will be complemented by a 2,000 liter water tank of capacity to ensure feminine hygiene and prevent childhood illnesses.

With these actions, basic rights are guaranteed to minors, adolescents and young people in Kenya, mainly girls, related to the coverage of basic needs and the protection and physical integrity for those cases of minors and adolescents at risk of suffering female genital mutilation.
