Well in Melapudur,St. Mary's Girls Hostel, Tamil Nadu

Background

Factors such as high levels of pollution, overexploitation of resources or industrialization, combined with technical restrictions and non-enforcement of laws, have led to the production of large amounts of waste and pollution that seriously affect water quality. Erratic rainfall, poor monsoons, depletion of aquifer potential due to over-exploitation, have resulted in many public wells providing less water during the monsoon season and no water at all during the summer.

Objectives

A well has been built to provide clean water to the Melapudur centre, St. Mary's Girls Hostel, in the southeastern state of Tamil Nadu, which has been severely affected by drought in recent years. The project also includes training for students and the general population in health, hygiene and sanitation, health risks, preventive measures, water-borne diseases, etc.

Milestones

This project has resulted in 120 people having access to drinking water to date.
