Background
The community of Villa Gonzalo is located to the north of the department of Amazonas on the banks of the Santiago River in Peru. It has great deficiencies in terms of health, education and access to basic services. An alarming situation has been detected with regard to access to drinking water, as the community consumes water from sources contaminated by faecal bacteria. In a context in which each woman has an average of 6 children, the vulnerability of children is of particular concern.
Objectives
An accepted, simple, fast and low-cost solution is proposed: rainwater harvesting. Through this solution, 16 public sources are established spread throughout the community. Each source serves about 9-10 families. The systems, composed mainly of a metallic surface and a polyethylene tank, can supply water suitable for human consumption to the 150 families of Villa Gonzalo.
Milestones
This project has ensured that, to date, 266 people have access to drinking water.
